With few exceptions, most instructional magic DVDs offer effects from a single, well known performer. As a result, a single DVD typically presents effects that range from close-up miracles to stage tricks. But when you’re researching a particular effect, say, Ambitious Card, you don’t want to have to cull information from a variety of sources. You want it all in one place.
Ambitious DVD
This is why Ambitious Card (World's Greatest Magic) is such a fantastic resource. You get advice on a single effect, Ambitious Card, from a variety of artists who lend their suggestions, techniques and even routines, which were compiled from their prior DVDs. If you want to focus on Ambitious Card, you don’t have to purchase several DVDs, but only one.
A classic routine with cards that a majority of magicians, particularly pros, perform. Ambitious Card offers a plot where a chosen card, which is typically signed by spectators, is placed anywhere in a deck of cards and somehow, continually rises to the top. At the end of many routines, the chosen card ends up in an impossible place, such as a wallet, box, shoe and more.
I regularly perform a version of Ambitious Card that relies on moves that I learned from Daryl’s book. While my routine that features five “rises” with varying methods and a final card to wallet is probably average among working pros, it has served me well in my restaurant and strolling work. I learned a few new moves from this DVD and heard some worthwhile advice from the experts, particularly Tommy Wonder.
Regal Treatment
David Regal’s routine, “Tenacious Climber,” offers two key aspects. One is a theme that involves a puppy that’s drawn on the chosen card. This not only makes the card unique and immediately recognizable, but creates a comical theme where spectators “call” their card to the top of the deck, much as they would a dog. Regal also offers a gimmick that makes for a clean ending where the top five or more cards on the deck can be clearly shown and then the chosen card arrives on top under nearly impossible conditions.
Harry Lorayne's routine offers some nice variations. I enjoyed watching this master in action with his fast and energetic presentation style. Not a full routine, Frank Garcia teaches a convincing bluff that allows a card to be shown in the center of the deck when it’s already “traveled.”
Michael Ammar’s version is basic but bewildering. For those who are beginning their foray into Ambitious Card, Ammar’s routine offers a great start. Doc Eason’s routine is notable for his finale where the chosen card ends up under his drink that’s sitting on the bar. In Paul Wilson’s version, the card ends up inside of his wallet.
Ambitious Wonder
Of all the performers, Tommy Wonder offers the most insight into performing Ambitious Card. His explanation offers some excellent moves and discusses considerable technical background.
In Wonder’s stunning version, the card ends up in a ring case that’s been sitting in plain view the entire time. Noteworthy is the way that Wonder makes the chosen card fall out of the ring box. While I knew what was coming and how it was done, I couldn’t believe how convincing Wonder made this appear.
Finally, Dai Vernon reminiscences about the origins of Ambitious Card. Here, you can glean some further insight into the psychology of the effect and how to make it entertaining.
I highly recommend this DVD. And at $19.95, it’s a bargain for those who are serious about learning and performing Ambitious Card. I wish this DVD were around when I was developing my routine.

The Story-
Well, I have owned this effect for quite some time now, but have never written a review for me. We're having a snow day today, so I thought it would be the perfect time to get to work on it... and possibly a new video!
Anyway, I absolutely love this effect, but I don't feel I use it enough. Don't know why, but I always forget about it, even though I like it a lot. Kind of weird, but let's get started!
The Effect-
I think the overall premise of this effect is great, as it involves a spectator into the effect (selecting and signing a card), and also brings in an everyday object (plastic baggy). The spectators really don't know what hit them... they just don't expect it.
Gimmicks-
The great thing about this effect is that it uses no gimmicks. There are no alterations of the baggy... all you need to perform is a baggy, deck of cards, and a Sharpie. You could, of course, do it without signing, but I think it takes away from the effect. If somebody walked up to you, handed you a baggy, deck of cards, and a Sharpie... you could and should perform this effect. It'd be kind of strange if someone walked up to you and handed you those things though.
Difficulty
Obviously, you're going to need to know how to control a card for this effect. That's just about the only sleight you need to know. Wayne teaches a great way to do this, but I personally do something different, because I'm not comfortable with the sleight teaches. You should be able to have the bare essentials (meaning the effect without any presentation) down within a day. The only thing is getting the right "amount" (owners will know what I mean) so the reveal is perfect.
Price-
A lot of people complain because of the price of downloads such as Indecent, but I didn't mind paying for it at all. Before deciding to purchase it, I read dozens of reviews, talked to owners, and even E-Mailed Wayne personally with a few questions. After all of that research, I finally bought it, and I thought it was worth every penny.
Teaching-
Anybody who has this, or any other W:H product will know that Wayne is an excellent teacher, and thoroughly goes over everything you need to know to perform this effect to its fullest. Nothing is left out, and there are I think... three performances demonstrating Wayne performing the effect to real spectators.
Quality-
I got the download, simply because I didn't want to wait for the DVD to arrive. The download is very high quality, and everything is crystal clear. There are multiple angles to learn from, if I remember correctly, and you don't miss a thing. The reason I said "If I remember" is because you can only watch the download on a certain computer, and it's on my Dad's, so I can't really remember how many angles there are.
Reactions-
I used to believe that only the presentation got your reactions, but Tyler Wilson completely changed my mind on it- a good presentation is absolutely nothing without a strong effect at its core. That's just how it is. Now, presentation can greatly enhance a performance, but the basis of your reactions will be from the effect. With that being said, this effect receives great reactions, and I'll go a little more in-depth on that in the next section.

Perform it on any glass door of any kind
On any car window, even the back window
Can be performed on a glass table top
Can be performed on a house window if you can get to the other side to complete the trick
A card is selected, signed, then mixed back into the deck.
Standing on one side of the window with the spectator, you ask them to push the cards up against the glass and mix them around in a jumble, holding them against the glass.
With the spectator holding the cards on the glass, you walk around to the other side.
You pause. You know that the effort you put into showmanship here is going to pay off in a few moments. Confidence is like blood running through your veins.
You tap on the cold, hard glass to emphasize the impossible nature of what is going to take place. You lower your hands and seemingly begin to extract one card-- slowly-- from the scatter that the spectator is pressing against on the other side.
To the spectators, it actually looks as if the card is sticking half way out of the glass... it takes genuine effort to pull it through. You can even take a few steps back.
There is a reason we call it Surgical Card Through Window. It looks like slow surgery on a plain slab of glass.
The doctor is in.
The card is SLOWLY turned over-- it is in fact their signed, selected card on the other side of the window.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. Because when you turn that card over you are going to be watching one.

Ask a spectator to wrap his own quarter in a plain napkin you give him. The magician doesn't touch either the napkin or coin until the spectator finally hands it to the magician to demonstrate the freezing. The napkin helps protect from the cold that will occur. [Note: there are no chemicals on the napkin and none in the magician's mouth or on his hands]
Summoning a change in his body temperature, the magician begins to blow freezing air onto the napkin, causing the napkin to become ice cold. He unwraps the quarter and, leaving it sitting by itself on the napkin, without even touching it, he blows on the coin.
The quarter frosts over white and freezes visually. When picked up by a spectator the coin is bitter cold and still white from frost.
Frozen was generated by the mind of Adam Grace. It is workable and practical. Our team noted that in every street performance the spectators had no answer except that Adam must have really changed his body temperature.

The DVD instructions make this a very easy trick to set up as you simply copy what he does on screen (using pause often). Now be warned, there are some awful jokes and ad libbing on this DVD but at the end of the day you learn how to make the gimmick and simply feel sorry for his sense of humour, hoping that it will return to him - one day!
That said Richard has made the whole vid in a live fashion so you really do see the step by step process of assembling the gimmick from start to finish. Theres no "heres one I made earlier" here!!
By the end of the DVD that's it, you're ready to go and you have a fantastic effect ready to blow people away.
With reagrds the 2 currencies to use I chose to go with US$1 bills and Canadian $5 bills but this was after a long period of deliberation with my currency exchange cashier at the travel agents. To avoid awkward questioning I made a gimmick using 2 similar but very different flyers. I then told them what I was looking for and showed them the trick so they understood. This not only broke the ice but they were also very eager to help as they wanted to see the finished effect with real money. So after looking at loads and loads of different currencies I chsoe US and Canadian out of personal preference.
By using currencies from 2 adjoining countries I use a patter about travelling from one country and crossing the border. Realising I only had the previous countires currency I transformed my money into the local currency. On my return to the border and return crossing I found myself in the reverse situation and so I transformed my money again and went about my business.
I give Richard Sanders - Slow Burn 9 out of 10. I would give 10 but the fact you cant hand EVERYTHING (you can hand out some bills) out for examination is the only drawback.

Bad Influence:
Remember that old trick you used to see in all the magic books? The one where you say, "I want you to pick the 3 of Spades. Now pick the 4 of Clubs. Now I will pick the Nine of Hearts." and of course they are all correct? This is definitly the definitive version of that plot. This time, the spectators choose all the cards and it plays together very, very nicely.

A four ace production. A really neat four ace production. Imagine this: The spectators shuffle the deck, then you take it back. In a few quick flourishes (that aren't hard) you find the first ace. Then, the second is found in your back pocket. The third is found when the deck visually vanishes, and the third ace is split in to two. This is gimmickless and really nice. He also uses a line in the trick that is pretty funny. I won't spoil it because you have to see it first.
This trick is REALLY awesome.

Angle Zero:
This is really, really cool. A card is taken, the corner torn off and vanished. It can appear anywhere you want, and it is the same corner. Not a duplicate. There are litterally thousands of applications for this. This trick is really powerful and now a staple in my stage act.

Catch:
This is AWESOME. I use this a lot. Basically a card is selected and returned to the center. Then, in a shuffle, the aces with the card in between SHOOT right out. I love this thing. You can also aim where you want the cards to land, even in a spectators hand!

A color change based on the shapeshifter. This is just a modified version of it, but he actually teaches two versions. I liked the second one better, but you might like the first. They are the same in handling, just on different positions on the hand.

Half-Vanish:
Kinda a fusion of the vanishing card plot and a sandwitch effect. I liked this though because with a simple wave of the hand, half of the card is gone, then the other half, and two cards on the table from the start contain the card. It uses no duplicates and is fairly easy.

Heritage:
This is a great effect. This has the magician holding four cards from the start. The spectator selects a card out of the deck. When inserted and the packet is flipped over, the spectator has chosen the card making a perfect poker hand. This is really easy and definitly something I will use.

Lapse:
I like this. It has the two signed cards that keep moving around and bieng where they shouldn't. I really don't think it makes since to do it this way, but it still gets awesome reactions. I use this occasionally.

Another color change. This is really cool. Your hand, inches away from the deck, does a quick waving motion and the card changes. It is very clean looking, but needs a lot of practice to do fluidly, which is the key to this ones deception.

A very, very very awesome looking card thru glass table top. Very, very, very, very (have I used that enough times? No? Okay then.) very, very, very, very, very, very visual and insanly hard to do. He teaches how to bring it up thru the glass and down thru the glass. Bringing it down is easier, but it is very angle sensitive.

Cost:
This DVDs cost was only 25 bucks if you buy them both. If you only bought one, then it was 30 dollars. For something this awesome though, I would have paid more.
Overall:
This DVD had a lot of awesome tricks on it. The only thing I question is why, in the U.K., Chris Kenner's book is always on the table. (It is a great book, but I digress.) He is a great teacher, his effects are great, a well put out DVD, and I hope to see more from him sometime in the near future. I rate this DVD a 4.5/5. (Needless to say, if you don't have it, BUY IT NOW, PUNK!)

Download Riot by Dan Hauss
The Effect - A card is freely selected and signed, front and back. The signed card is returned to the deck, protruding. With little delay, the deck is held so the spectator can see their card protruding from the deck (Yes, it is their card, they can see their actual card the whole effect). The performer then causes the signed card to VERY visually rise through the deck to the top. A couple endings are possible, both of which involve the signature on the back of the card (hidden by the top card) to visually jump to the top, completing the rising of the card to the top. The card is then handed out for inspection.
Gimmicks - Yes. The gimmick is clever and easy to make. It is also easy to hide in the deck. You may frown because a gimmick is used, but it is worth it. Use this trick as a closer to your ACR. The way I plan on integrating this is to go with my old closer (the pop up bent card) and then show them how it works. Have them sign the front of the card for ACR, and then, for my finale, I would have them sign the back, then do Riot. They would have seen previously a card travel through the deck and pop out at the top, with Riot they can see very specifically how the card rises. The gimmick is not something you can keep in the deck for other tricks, but is small enough to be very easily put into play. Dan also covers a way to get the card out of play very easily. If you use this as an ACR closer, you are set.
Performance - Very visual. There are angles, but if you use the normal method, all you have to worry about is people on one side. The front and the other side are just fine. The effect also involved no seriously difficult sleights. The Gamblers Cop is used, and you will be wrist killing the spectators view of the deck occasionally, but everything else is just setup, no real serious sleights. The setup is kinda knacky (I won't go into any more details for the effect's sake) but it is something you can get used to.
The Teaching - Dan Hauss finally can teach. He isn't great, but he covers what you need to know. He isn't quite as big of a toolbox this time, a little more personality helped (although he is still weird as anything else.) The teaching on the 24 minute T11 1on1 covers everything you really need to know. He does not teach you how to ditch the gimmick for immediate handout of the deck, but you ought to be able to use your own brain for that. The holes that are there are nothing that any non-YouTube magician will be able to figure out (What I am saying is that if you aren't some spoiled 13-year old with a camera who does nothing but reveal (terribly) tricks on youtube or post equally wretched videos of poor magic trying to show off, then you will have the experience needed to fill in the blanks that Dan Hauss leaves, obviously counting on the learner having a little magic background.) There is no real patter suggested here, but once again, if you aren't a toolbox, you can figure something out that will work.
